#SELFIE

Music Monday:

First, let me take a #SELFIE.

Alright, now that that’s all taken care of we can get on with the post!  Call me “out of the loop” but for the first time ever I both heard the song Selfie and witnessed the affect it has on white girls at the bar.  The second the beat hit my eardrum I knew I was missing out on something fantastic because everyone’s hands immediately hit the sky and the awkward dancing bouncing began.  Catchy – yes; accurate – yes; a brilliant composition – I think not, but who am I to judge.

In my opinion, the “Selfie” has become a real art for active smartphone users, and I know from experience that capturing the perfect selfie takes lots of practice because of the angle, light, and proximity to the lens.  I personally love the selfie trend because I don’t like bothering others to take my picture, and this way I can take as many as I want (as frequently as I want) without having to call the amateur photographer back to when I’m not crazy about their work.  Selfies have revolutionized the world of apps, photo editing programs, and cell phones in general because now nearly every phone is equipped with a forward facing camera.  Even though some people still need to use a mirror apparently…

The song #SELFIE is mostly an EDM song but it also features verses spoken by a narcissistic woman in the bathroom of a club.  I, like most other 20-something females, can highly relate to this song and I love that everyone has their own interpretation of the lyrics.  In a nutshell, Alexis Killacam is in the bathroom criticizing other club goers, explaining her love/hate relationship with a man named Jason, fixing her makeup (multiple times), and taking selfies to upload to Instagram.  Now, for those who are reading this post and are NOT active club goers, this pretty much happens on an hourly basis.   Also, let’s be real, the most difficult part about Instragram is finding the PERFECT filter (which is also addressed in this song).

Although #SELFIE has received many negative reviews, it hit the top of the charts in countries such as Finland, Sweden, Australia, Norway, and of course the United States.  Whether you love it or hate it, #Selfie by The Chainsmokers is all over social media right now.  In fact, some have compared it to the Harlem Shake, Valley Girl, or The Fox.  The Chainsmokers released #SELFIE four months ago today and stated the following in a recent interview:

“Honestly, “Selfie” is kind of a phenomenon for us. We made it and thought it was funny and put it out as an edit. Then Dim Mak wanted to buy it, and they bought it from us and put it out officially and we made a video for it. This was all just because we thought it was fun. And then the song just kind of took on a life of its own. Which is honestly really great because it’s brought in a new audience of people that listen to music that we’ve made that we’re more passionate about.”

Even though my first reaction to this song was “OMG what the heck is going on here?” due to the immediate arm waving, bouncing, spilling drinks, flashing iPhones, and smiles – my overall feeling at the end of the song was “Woah, that was kinda fun!”

So, what’s your opinion?  Do you remember your first reaction to the song #SELFIE, and could you relate to the lyrics?

Also, here are some of MY recent selfies because, well, why not?! 😉

Powder Pink: Top 10 for Spring

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

My current obsession with Powder Pink  may be due the sunny days that are (hopefully) coming our way here in Wisconsin, but it’s also one of those hues that looks fantastic on everyone!  No matter what color your skin or hair is, this wonderful shade of pink is sure to flatter.  Until recently I used to condone wearing anything but dark colors on my legs due because I’m so petite, but in my opinion, if you love the shade/cut/piece in general it’s worth the purchase!

A couple years ago when I was shopping at a mall in Poland I came across a pair of pale pink ‘skinnies’ with zippers up the ankles and I fell in love with them.  They fit like a glove, and even though I thought they made me look even shorter than my already 5′ frame, I bought them and I’m so happy that I did.

Although this shade does look great paired with other colors, I can’t resist the classic look of powder pink, black and white.  For example, the Go To Blazer from Forever 21 paired with a white crop top and those adorable black/white polka dot shorts are sure to turn heads.  In a good way!  Unfortunately, my closet it’s definitely lacking some spring staples in this shade, so powder pink is on the top of my ‘must buy color’ list for the next time I hit the shops.

If you’re not crazy about the way you look in Powder Pink (like I was at first) mix it up and buy some pink accent pillows for the home, a delicate beaded pink headband, or some awesome wedges to get with the season.  It’s such a great look for spring, so try it out!

Chao!

Day 8: Control the Cubicle in Your Pocket 💻

Flashback to 2012: First iPhone

Flashback to 2012: First iPhone!

Many of us walk around with a cubicle in our pocket, and we always have the feeling that we should be working, or could be working—or we actually are working! At home, this constant pull toward work can distract us from the people to whom we want to give our time and attention. – Gretchen Ruben

Luckily, controlling the “cubicle in my pocket” has never really been a challenge for my loved ones or me because we’ve always made an effort to disconnect from the day’s work activities once we pass through the front door.  But many families struggle with the constant need to work and this ‘need’ can be detrimental to the overall family dynamic.  I personally have never understood this, but I believe there are little things that the traditional workaholic can do to limit distractions.  One thing that I do in order to keep myself disconnected from the office while at home is: Not connecting my work emails to my personal phone.  Since the world today has more advanced cellphone users than ever before, I can see how getting work emails sent to your precious devise would seem like a necessity, but it’s important to disconnect.  I’ve heard horror stories about people who went years without getting their work emails straight to their cell phone and once they connected…they never went back.  Before they knew it, they were addicted to checking their phone inbox, limiting both family and personal time.  If possible, make an attempt to leave your work phone in your brief case for the night or make the change to not get your work emails to your personal phone.  Easier said than done (I know, I know), but give it a try and I assure you that there will be no regrets!
